Stansted: trains, contactless and connections

Stansted is linked to London by railway, not by an extension of the Underground. Stansted Express reaches Liverpool Street and offers an interchange at Tottenham Hale. From those stations you continue on the urban network according to your accommodation; choosing the right connection can prevent a detour with luggage.

Stansted is linked to London by railway, not by an extension of the Underground. Stansted Express reaches Liverpool Street and offers an interchange at Tottenham Hale. From those stations you continue on the urban network according to your accommodation; choosing the right connection can prevent a detour with luggage.

The airport station is beneath the terminal, with a route using lifts, ramps and escalators. This makes the connection convenient but does not remove the time needed after leaving the aircraft, completing formalities or waiting for a train. For your return flight, also allow for the departure procedures after reaching the terminal.

The airport’s official information checked on 19 October 2026 confirms contactless acceptance on Stansted Express. Oyster is not valid to Stansted Airport. This distinction matters: older advice can confuse the two payment methods or describe the contactless extension as something still waiting to open rather than the current published arrangement.

Do not assume contactless is always the cheapest price. Tickets bought ahead, flexibility conditions and discounts can change the comparison. Nor should you extend acceptance to every train at the station: the airport explicitly says CrossCountry does not accept contactless as payment for the journey on its services.

Tottenham Hale or Liverpool Street

Tottenham Hale provides the Victoria line, useful for continuing towards King’s Cross, Oxford Circus or Victoria when the itinerary supports it. Liverpool Street connects with other lines and the eastern side of central London. Check platforms and interchange walking if you need lifts. For Stratford, look up the specific railway route and changes: do not assume every Stansted Express departure runs there directly merely because a general airport page mentions the destination.

  • Compare both stations with your address.

Pay without confusing cards

With contactless, use the same bank card or device to touch in and out. An Oyster card that works later on the Underground does not cover the airport leg. If choosing an advance ticket, read what happens after a flight delay before purchasing; a fare with specific restrictions may be less flexible. Avoid mixing a ticket and a card touch for the same entry without asking station staff for assistance.

  • Oyster does not extend to Stansted Airport.

Early flights and coaches

Check the official timetable for your day: trains are not guaranteed to operate continuously overnight. For an arrival after the final service, investigate a booked coach with an exact destination and stop. Victoria, Stratford and Liverpool Street are not interchangeable when your hotel is elsewhere. Road journeys depend on traffic; compare the complete trip to your accommodation and the operator’s policy for flight delays, not just the headline price.

  • Save an overnight fallback before flying.
