Gatwick does not have a London Underground station. Its railway connection is National Rail: Southern and Gatwick Express serve Victoria, while Thameslink offers other central stations. Choose the arrival that reduces your onward journey instead of looking for a supposed Tube line extending all the way to the airport.
The station is at South Terminal. If your flight uses North Terminal, take the free inter-terminal shuttle and include that transfer in your plan. Train journey times exclude baggage reclaim, passport control and waiting for the next departure; they also do not end at your hotel door.
Gatwick Express is an option to Victoria, not the name of every airport train. Southern also serves Victoria with different stopping patterns. Thameslink can make more sense for London Bridge, Blackfriars, Farringdon or St Pancras, avoiding an unnecessary journey through Victoria when your destination lies on another corridor.
Oyster and contactless can be used for journeys between Gatwick and London, but that does not turn Gatwick into a station within the ordinary Underground fare zones. Acceptance of a payment method does not establish that every operator charges the same fare or that any travel pass covers the transfer.
Choose your London arrival
Compare your accommodation with Victoria and the Thameslink stations before buying. Victoria connects with the Victoria, District and Circle lines; London Bridge connects with Jubilee and Northern. Farringdon offers an Elizabeth line interchange, but check the actual walking route and accessibility. Not every train calls at every station mentioned here. Read the destination and calling points of the particular departure, especially when engineering work or diversions are advertised.
- Compare Southern and Thameslink as well as the Express.
Oyster, contactless and tickets
The airport confirms Oyster and contactless for London journeys and excludes the 60+ Oyster photocard from that advice. Use the same medium at both ends: a phone and its physical bank card are not interchangeable. Compare pay as you go with advance tickets and valid child or group discounts. Do not extrapolate acceptance to Brighton, Reading or another destination: check the current coverage of that specific route before entering.
- Check the fare for your chosen operator.
Return journey and alternatives
Check engineering work and timetables for the actual flight date. If Victoria is not served, Thameslink from another station may be an alternative, but only when the planner confirms it. Coaches serve both terminals according to route and booking; road traffic means their duration is not fixed. Save your ticket, correct terminal and a realistic fallback. For an early flight, also check how you will reach the London station when local transport is limited.
- Include the North–South Terminal shuttle when needed.
