Heathrow has three different rail choices into London. The Piccadilly line is part of the Underground, the Elizabeth line is a cross-city railway, and Heathrow Express is a dedicated service to Paddington. Sharing an airport does not mean sharing a fare, route or ticket conditions.
Choose according to your accommodation address rather than the advertised journey to a central station. Piccadilly can avoid an interchange for South Kensington or parts of the West End, while the Elizabeth line can continue across central London instead of ending your journey at Paddington.
Start with your flight terminal: there are stations serving Terminals 2 & 3, Terminal 4 and Terminal 5. Airport trains do not all follow the same branch. On the return journey, check the destination display before boarding and allow time to reach departures after leaving the train.
Treat train travel as just one part of the transfer. Terminal corridors, waiting, immigration and the final journey to your hotel all add time. Use the official planner for your actual date rather than treating an advertised station-to-station journey as a guaranteed arrival at your accommodation.
Choose the right service
Piccadilly is useful when its stations put you near your accommodation without changing. The Elizabeth line serves a different set of stations, including Paddington and the central corridor. Heathrow Express makes most sense when Paddington genuinely suits your destination. Compare the complete itinerary, including any onward connection: a fast train can lose its advantage if you then double back with luggage. These are not three Underground lines.
- Compare the final address, not just Paddington.
Fares: an important exception
TfL states that Tube and Elizabeth line journeys to or from Heathrow are charged peak fares if they start, finish or pass through Zone 1. Do not assume a Sunday trip removes this exception. Oyster and contactless work on Piccadilly and the Elizabeth line, but do not infer that Heathrow Express costs the same or is covered by an ordinary travel pass. Check the chosen product before paying.
- Use the same card or device to touch in and out.
Terminals, luggage and the return trip
Enter the correct terminal in the journey planner. If you need to avoid stairs, request a complete accessible itinerary, because a central interchange can be harder than the airport station. Before returning, check engineering work and the first or last departure of your chosen service. Allow extra margin for a different terminal, assistance or a connection: the existence of a railway does not guarantee a service throughout the night.
- Save a backup route before leaving the hotel.
