Luton and London City are different airports with different rail connections to central London. Luton combines the DART shuttle with National Rail, while London City has a DLR station. Check the airport name and code on your booking before choosing accommodation, buying a ticket or selecting your departure station.
For Luton, the train from London reaches Luton Airport Parkway rather than the terminal. Continue from there on DART. The airport’s current page confirms that DART replaced the shuttle bus in March 2023, so guidance still describing that bus as the normal railway connection is out of date.
London City is in east London. Its DLR station is not on Piccadilly or the Elizabeth line and should never be confused with Heathrow. DLR connects with other urban lines; the right interchange depends on the service pattern and destination shown by the official journey planner for your travel date.
Always distinguish the main train fare from the airport shuttle element. The presence of bank-card readers does not mean Oyster and contactless have identical coverage. For either airport, check the complete luggage-friendly route, accessibility and first or last services before relying on a connection with very little spare time.
Luton: Parkway and DART
East Midlands Railway and Thameslink offer options from St Pancras to Parkway; Thameslink also links other central stations depending on the service. DART completes the final leg to the terminal and the airport publishes round-the-clock operation, which does not guarantee the same hours on the main railway. When buying a combined ticket, choose Luton Airport, code LUA, and confirm DART is included: Luton Airport Parkway is not the same physical or ticketing destination.
- Do not confuse Luton station with Parkway.
Luton: current payment guidance
The airport’s official London rail page, checked on 19 October 2026, advertises contactless payment. We do not describe the extension as pending or infer that Oyster is therefore valid. To avoid uncertainty over the main railway and DART elements, a combined ticket explicitly covering both is a clear alternative. Check current prices and conditions for each product; do not automatically treat this airport transfer as part of an ordinary central London spending cap.
- Confirm what your product covers before entering.
London City: DLR and connections
TfL confirms Oyster and contactless on the DLR at London City Airport. Look up the actual departure to decide whether to continue towards Bank or change, for example, at Canning Town for Jubilee. DLR is not a direct train to every neighbourhood and the destination display matters. If a connection requires a lift, check its status too. Engineering work can change the route: enter London City Airport as your origin, not a station simply containing London.
- DART at Luton; DLR at London City.
